No — darker colors work best with pink hair, or like avril, white blonde.
You don’t have to go to a hairdresser to have your hair bleached, just go to your local Sally Beauty Supply or Hot Topic store and pick up a bleaching kit.
If you want a good bleaching kit, and long lasting color, I would choose Volume 40 as your bleaching kit. Its fantastic, and doesn’t burn the scalp (available at Hot Topic). If you want a GOOD pink color, go woth Special Effects Hairdye. They have FANTASTIC colors, and if you want a pink streak like Avril, choose Cupcake Pink. (also available at hot topic)
Google search Special Effects Cupcake Pink for a color palette on their website so you can make a choice.
Btw, Volume 40 is about 12 dollars, and a bottle of Special Effects is about 10 dollars. References :

Nope.
I have two – somewhat faded now – pink streaks in my dark brown hair.
BUT you will need the hair bleached by the hairdresser before getting the pink done.
